The Best Abs Equipment is Cheap and “Old School”

by Talia on September 1st, 2010

The best abs equipment has been around for ages, but lately there have been a ton of misleading infomercials which push expensive complicated pieces of equipment. These products can give people some results, but unfortunately not as good as some of the things we have used for years. So what do I consider the best abs equipment? I will talk about the three best in this article.

#1 The Classic Chin-Up Bar

This is far and away the best piece of ab equipment out there. Nothing works the abs as hard as hanging leg raises. Just take a look at the abs on a gymnast. Hanging leg raises create a stronger contraction in your abs than any other piece of equipment. This is a very difficult move, which is why a lot of people do not do them. And if you try to do several sets – well, only a small number of people have the core strength for that. Whether you do hanging leg raises with your legs bent or with legs straight, it will eventually create a carved mid section. I have always been sold on this exercise, but after reading the newly released “Convict Conditioning” I believe in this exercise more than ever. The author Paul Wade explain that the best abs on the planet belong to those locked up in the penitentiary and their main focus is on hanging leg raises.

#2 The Ab Wheel

An inexpensive ab wheel can be purchased for less than $15 from most stores that specialize in sports equipment. Doing ab wheel roll-out develops the entire torso and not just your abs. A stronger torso means your abs will be better able to protect your spine. Your abs will be incredibly defined if you use an ab wheel to perform ab roll-outs and a chin up bar to perform hanging leg raises.

#3. A Cushioned Floor Mat

I was almost tempted to list this as number one. But since most carpets come with padding these days, you could probably get away with not having one. That being said, a good exercise mat will make every floor exercise more comfortable. You won’t be in as much pain doing exercises like lying leg raises if you do them on a mat. Same with planks. Personally, I complete all my ab exercise sessions with 1 or 2 sets of planks. If I make the attempt without a mat, it can be excruciating.

The Three Devices Listed Here are Better than Any Commercial Abs Equipment

Honestly, just having a chin up bar goes a long way. With a quick Google search, you’ll be able to find several low cost models that can be easily installed in your home. Even better, you will be able to do chin ups with the bar too, which are a fantastic way to work out your upper body. If you want to find the best abs equipment, skip the new junk and look to the classics.
